Pan Yuliang was born in Chen Hsiu-ching, Yangchou in 1895. In 1918, Pan was admitted to the Shanghai Art School, where she studied under Wang Chi-yuan. In 1921, she traveled to Europe, where she studied painting at the National School in Lyons and the National Academy of Fine Arts in Paris. In 1925, Pan went on to study at the National Art Institute in Rome. The following year, Pan was awarded Golden Prize at“The Rome International Arts Exhibition”. In 1929, she encountered Liu Hai-su in Rome and was persuaded by him to return home in order to take a teaching position at the Shanghai Art School. From 1929-1932, Pan accepted the invitation of Xu Bei-hong and took up the appointment as a professor in the Central Academy of Fine Arts. During this time, Pan participated in many exhibitions, both individually and as part of a group including “The First Female Chinese Painter”, organized by Wang Ji-yuan in Shanghai. By 1936, she had held her 5th solo exhibition in Nanjing and in 1937, she returned to Europe to take part in “The Exposition International de Paris”. In 1945, she was elected as president of the Chinese Overseas Students Art Association in France. Pan's work has been exhibited and received acclaim internationally, in particular in England, America and Italy, as well as having received numerous awards including the Paris Golden Prize and the Belgian Silver Prize.
